Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common disorders in gastroenterology. Altered motility and hypersensitivity, along with various psychosocial factors are major mechanistic determinants that interact in IBS disorders. Digestive disorders are often associated with visceral pain in which the visceral pain threshold is decreased, leading to a visceral hypersensitivity. Indeed, lower visceral sensory thresholds to colorectal distension have been found in patients suffering from IBS, incorporating autonomic and visceromotor responses and pain. These same behavioral, autonomic, and motor responses induced by colonic distension have also been observed in experimental models.
